Mac and desktop app development

Some tools work better as a desktop app: anything that handles large files, needs to work offline or sits on a staff computer all day. We build desktop apps with Electron and React, which run on Mac and Windows from one codebase, or natively in Swift for the Mac.

What we build

Mac & desktop apps

  • File and media tools

Converting, compressing, renaming and inspecting files on the computer, with no upload.

  • Staff tools

A desktop front end for your own systems, for people who keep it open all day.

  • Offline-first apps

Apps that keep working without a connection and sync when one returns.

  • Licensing and accounts

Sign-in, licences and paid features, checked against your own server.

  • Signing and updates

Code signing, macOS notarisation and an in-app updater so people stay on the current version.

Approach

How we build it

Electron and React give one codebase for Mac and Windows, with heavy file work handed to native libraries so it stays fast and never leaves the computer.

For Mac-only tools that need to feel completely native, we use Swift and SwiftUI, the same frameworks as our iOS apps.

Questions

Common questions

Can one app run on Mac and Windows?

Yes. An Electron app can be packaged for both from one codebase, signed and notarised for macOS and with an installer for Windows.

Why a desktop app instead of a web app?

Desktop apps can work with local files and hardware, keep working offline and process large files without uploading them. If none of that matters, a web app is usually simpler.

Working together

How an enquiry works

No sales calls to book. Tell us about the project and we’ll take it from there.

  1. Send an enquiry

Tell us what you need built, what you use now and roughly when. A few sentences is enough to start.

  2. Steve reads it

Every enquiry is read by Steve, the founder. If it looks like a good fit, he replies by email with questions.

  3. Talk it through

If the project suits us both, we talk through what to build first and how to get there.

Need a desktop app?
